It's always nice to connect with a genre that one doesnt usually gravitate towards This was a pleasant read and insightful. Love like the French is a compilation of experiences, advice, and views regarding relationships, sex, self worth, and even the meaning of love and friendship. 

The book is formatted in a letters the author has received along with his advice and his views on the topic. I loved the respectful way the author engages with his audience, he tries his best to share his thoughts without coming across someone that is judging the situation or claiming to be the one that knows it all. The different topics we encountered in this book, like the different cultures. I had no idea there were differences between dating scenarios when it came to different countries. It was nice to see how if differs, although subtle there are definitely differences between American dating and French. 

There were some experiences that made me look back on my own experiences, some made me laugh out loud and others made me think about the reaction I had to certain situations. I definitely recommend diving into this one if you're looking for an uplifting insightful read.

As a hopeless romantic, this was such a fast and fascinating read indeed! I really enjoyed diving into Guy Blaise’s “French perspective” on all things love, marriage, and romance.

Formatted as replies of advice to various letters received from his readers, Blaise tackles a multitude of questions and concerns from real American women (mostly), with topics ranging from the act of sex to sexuality itself and more. I really appreciated the care and insight this author lends to the experience of women and his devotion to helping women to better understand and accept themselves as well as help his readers to become solution-oriented with the struggles they are facing in their love lives.

It’s surprising to walk away from such a short read feeling like I learned so much! Blaise of course touches on those funnier moments in the dating world such as dick pics and troublesome in-laws, but I I’ll remember most from this book is the way he did not shy away from delving deep into the profoundly worrying issues of racism and abuse that plague so many relationships worldwide. Also, I found it really interesting in particular to see so many questions that were COVID-specific. It allowed me to reflect on how much of the things happening in relationships and households as a result of the pandemic truly are a global connection over which we can all continue to bond.

Naturally, this is not a book I would typically reach for, but one of my goals this year has been to read outside my comfort zone. This book is nonfiction and not set up like a "Traditional" book. It is basically like a chat between the reader and the author. Each "chapter" starts off with a letter, typically a questions or a plea for help. Then it moves into the author's answer and guidance.

Did I agree with everything the author said? Nope, but that's okay! I love reading other people's perspectives when it comes to bettering myself or helping out in my relationships. It definitely gave me a new perspective and provided ideas I had not originally thought about. I thoroughly enjoyed how open and honest Blaise was in his guidance. The emotions from each letter range from lighthearted to gut wrenching at times.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for new perspectives or wanting to grow in their relationships.

LOVE LIKE THE FRENCH was a unique reading experience, but one that allows me to share a fun fact about me. Oftentimes, when flipping through the pages of a magazine, I like to skim through the relationship advice column out of curiosity. Some of the questions are absurd, others are more interesting, but more times than not I criticize the advice given for lack of tact, which is why I was pleasantly surprised by this book and so engrossed I finished reading it in one sitting.

Though the author never claims to be an expert, his own background growing up in a household surrounded by women and his experience living in France and the USA allow him to have the means to give advice to those who seek it. Love Like the French is a collection of letters the author received on various matters of the heart ranging from how to keep a relationship balanced to cheating to boundaries to sex. The author’s replies oftentimes draw a comparison between the American approach, more private for ordinary people and paraded and stigmatized for celebrities, and the French one, which is more open, straightforward and honest. As an Italian, I found many similarities between the French mindset and that of the modern Italian generations and agreed with the advice given by the author on the majority of the topics touched. I especially appreciated the author’s willingness to share personal experiences with his readers, such as the racism faced in an online dating attempt and a past toxic marriage, but also positive memories of past and recent relationships. It added a layer of humanity and a level of trustworthiness to his words, which I think is very important when facing sensible topics and crucial in establishing a bond with your readers.

What a unique reading experience!

Love Like the French by Guy Blaise is a collection of letters the author wrote in response to questions from readers on subjects they’d wished he’d touched in his previous book, Vive la Différence. 

The contents of the letters, and therefore the advices given, vary. There’s matters of the heart and of the body alike. People ask for advice in how to talk to their spouse about certain matters, or how to approach someone intimately, or how to act in a certain situation in the bedroom. Guy Blaise replies to each letter with a tactful and respectful approach. He never professes to be an expert, but he often dips into his own experience as a Frenchman living in the United States, or experiences of friends, to give some sound advice. Before reading this book, I didn’t realize the subtle differences between the American approach to romance and the European one. Being Italian, I often found myself nodding along to the author’s observations. 

I appreciated how personal he got, even when the experiences left me truly heartbroken—like the racism faced on a dating app when a woman refused to continue speaking to him once she discovered he was a black man. Often times, people who give this sort of advice often act as if they held the secret of the universe. Their advice, even if unintentionally, seems mocking. If I feel it, imagine the person who actually reached out. The author of this book, however, was real, honest, and open. Reading this book didn’t feel like being looked down. It was like having a real life conversation with a friend.

This was such a interesting read! It’s written as a series of letters that were sent to Guy asking for relationship advice, ranging from whether or not to leave a troubled relationship, down to intimate questions in the bedroom, and Guy’s responses to those questions. He shares a lot of his own experiences, including serious topics like racism and pushing relationship boundaries. I didn’t realize prior to reading this book how different relationships were viewed in France versus here in the US.

This is definitely a book I’d recommend checking out if you’re into non-fiction. There were quite a few times that I laughed out loud too. I really enjoyed Guy’s view on a lot of aspects of love, and I even learned a thing or two that I will use going forward in my own relationship. 💕

Happy to be sharing this new book with you! It was so different than anything I've read in a long while! Guy chronicles his experiences dating French women vs his experiences dating American women as a way to compare the two relationship cultures. It's written in response to questions he received from his previous book, so it reads like an advice column/letters to a friend. There are both very serious topics and also humorous ones, giving it a very balanced perspective. He discusses everything from racial tensions to dick pics and is extremely candid about it all, using a very comfortable and trustworthy tone.

I found it all quite interesting, sometimes humorous, and my favorite part was the intrigue between the two cultures and the educational sense. There were things I agreed with, a few things I didn’t, and overall that’s the beauty of putting yourself into a different perspective- it was great. 😊
