A friend lent me this book so I've missed a few in the D.D. Warren series, but I still found it to be a very good story on its own. 
I was engrossed in the plot from the start and it kept calling for me, difficult to put down!
I don't particularly like D.D.'s character though and this stage of her personal life was especially not my cup of tea, but the mystery was good. 
Tessa Leoni was also not my favorite character, so we'll see how the next ones in the series will be.

This is a late review - I should've written this right after I read it but oh well.
I really did enjoy this book. I loved the interactions between DD and Tessa, as well as the dynamics. I've grown to love DD as a character, and I think she's getting headway! Her team is getting better at solving crimes instead of trying to nail the wrong person. 
Throughout the whole book I found myself quite anxious because there was so much we didn't know. There are always characters who know more than they let on, and it's partially torture to have to figure them out! But I really enjoyed trying to find Sophie (Tessa's daughter) with Tessa, even though the reality was kinda heartbreaking... (view spoiler)[Shane? And Hamilton? Ugh. None of the people they interviewed, except for Mrs Ennis, were telling the freaking truth. Shane and Hamilton wanted to shrug off the stolen funds; Juliana lied about her shooting her brother; Tessa lied to get out of prison... What's next? (hide spoiler)] 
I think the ending was quite satisfying, and I really do admire Tessa as a character. And I love the parallel of DD and her (view spoiler)[baby (hide spoiler)]. I loved how the two storylines kind of echoed off each other in a really nice way. 
Idk what else to say but I'm giving this book 9/10! Lisa always writes the most page-turner-y page turners. This book in particular, with a mother's love overcoming all else, both warmed my heart and made me sad.
