Desaparesidos
"In Spanish and Portuguese languages, the term “desaparecidos” refers to the “disappeared people” at the time of Operation Condor in the 1970s and 1980s. In Philippine context and in this novel, Bautista used this to refer to all the people who were negatively affected by Martial Law (1972-1981) during the former President Ferdinand Marcos (1917-1989) regime. The story is about Anna who is a student-activist during the First Quarter Storm or the time prior to the imposition of Martial Law. Then when that repressive law is imposed, she joins the rebel forces under New People’s Army, the armed branch of the Communist Party. During her stay with the rebel forces, she has to leave her 6-month old daughter, Malaya to a friend Karla who is in her last trimester of pregnancy. Karla’s husband Jinky is also a member of the rebel forces... the political activists claim that they fight for the country because they love the common people. However, in the process, they compromise and neglect their own family...” -- K.D. Absolutely on goodreads.com
