While this book probably won’t crack many “top five” book lists, it’s ultra satisfying for what it is. A fun mystery with tons of great Victorian era atmosphere, gritty street life in a big city, looming threats from a serial killer on the rise, and enough magic to add a richness that will leave you wanting more.

This book was the Caffeine & Legends book club choice for April, and I really enjoyed it! Think… Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes meets Carnival Row. The mysteries kept me riveted and the well-described settings provided such an ambiance. I’ve seen some readers call it “steampunk” but I think a more accurate subgenre is “gaslamp fantasy” or just Victorian historical fantasy. The surprise cliffhanger/new mystery felt a little contrived, but otherwise it would have made a solid standalone.
