Because in all her daydreaming about one day having children to dote on, she definitely didn't count on giving her heart to her husband quite so quickly! And now they're out of luck Lucas's problem doesn't go away with his marriage; if anything, it gets worse. Now Shannon is in danger too, and the gunslinger Lucas hired to protect her is hiding terrible secrets of his own. This was a solid 3 stars for me. It had so much potential, but the author literally skipped all of the relationship building in the beginning. The story goes from their first meeting at the train station to then (having skipped the wedding and most of the wedding night) immediately after the couple has made love for the first time. So we don't get any of that initial awkwardness and chemistry and trust building. Then the author throws a bunch of miscommunication and misunderstandings at the couple. It's like were given so little to believe in and enjoy the love between the two characters which in a short romance novel is key. Not only that, but the plot although interesting, was very underwhelming. The thing with short novels is that it is so easy for the reader to feel like they needed MORE. Right before I read this book I read another even shorter romance that was so well done that I didn't have any of these issues so I know it is possible for a short romance to be satisfying. I'm looking forward to Verrick's story since I feel like a huge issue with this book is that we didn't get enough of a closure with Verrick and Lucas. I just hope that the second book is better.
