Fiction. Translated from the Italian by William Weaver. Luigi Pirandello's extraordinary final novel begins when Vitangelo Moscarda's wife remarks that Vitangelo's nose tilts to the right. This commonplace interaction spurs the novel's unemployed, wealthy narrator to examine himself, the way he perceives others, and the ways that others perceive him. At first he only notices small differences in how he sees himself and how others do; but his self-examination quickly becomes relentless, dizzying, leading to often darkly comic results as Vitangelo decides that he must demolish that version of himself that others see. Pirandello said of his 1926 novel that it "deals with the disintegration of the personality. It arrives at the most extreme conclusions, the farthest consequences." Indeed, its unnerving humor and existential dissection of modern identity find counterparts in Samuel Beckett's Molloy trilogy and the works of Thomas Bernhard and Vladimir Nabokov.

In an autobiographical letter, published in 1924, the author refers to this work as the ..".bitterest of all, profoundly humoristic, about the decomposition of life...." Vitangelo, the protagonist, discovers by way of a completely irrelevant question that his wife poses to him that everyone he knows, and everyone he has ever met, has constructed a Vitangelo persona in their own imagination and that none of these personas corresponds to the image of Vitangelo that he himself has constructed and believes himself to be. The reader is immediately immersed in a cruel game of confusing projections, mirroring the reality of social existence itself, which imperiously dictate their rules. As a result, the first, ironic "awareness" of Vitangelo consists in the knowledge of that which he definitely is not; the preliminary operation must therefore consist in the spiteful destruction of all of these fictitious masks.

!!!! Absolutely AMAZING !!!! This entire book is being able to live inside someone else's brains and thoughts, some which were very relatable. It's eye opening and I had to pause every now and then because of all the points being made. It's amazing seeing these thoughts written down, and considering the narrator isn't 100% reliable makes it sooo much better.

i loved everything about this: the plot, the concept, and all the (unique and unpredictable) characters. moscarda, for example, is such a well-crafted protagonist who kept surprising me with his wit and uncensored sense of superiority. i definitely didn’t expect this book to be funny (since i’m reading this for school) but it was, and it also gave me many things to think about. pirandello snapped with this one ! looking forward to reading more by him, his are the first italian classics that i find truly entertaining

Da uno specchio, superficie ambigua e inquietante, emerge un giorno per Gengè un volto di sé finora ignorato - un naso inopinatamente in pendenza verso destra. Inizia qui, con una certa parentela con il protagonista del celebre romanzo si Sterne, quel Tristram Shandy dallo 'sfortunato naso schiacciato', l'avventura di Vitangelo (Gengè) Moscarda, sdoppiato in un altro se stesso, conosciuto solo dallo sguardo altrui. Un passo più in là, e le cose si complicano - Moscarda non è più alle prese con un solo estraneo, bensì con centomila estranei che convivono in lui, secondo la realtà che gli altri gli danno, 'ciascuno a sua modo'. Nello sfuggire alle proprie centomila realtà, Gengè si troverà a rinnegare qualunque 'forma'. Non resterá, dunque, che accettarsi come 'nessuno', smarrendo ogni identità e disperdendosi nel mare dell'essere.

Uno, nessuno e centomila è stato il primo romanzo che ho letto dello scrittore siciliano Luigi Pirandello e mi ha conquistata dalle prime pagine.
Non è un libro lungo, è vero, ma in sé racchiude una complessità, una profondità ed una sensibilità che lo rendono lungo tanto quanto lo è un libro di cinquecento pagine. Non è una lettura da prendere alla leggera, da affrontare a cuor leggero, in maniera superficiale. Questo non è uno di quei libri che possono essere letti anche se stanchi, con le palpebre pesanti dal sonno, no.
Uno, nessuno e centomila è un soliloquio della lunghezza di duecento pagine, un’argomentazione complessa, ricca d’esempi e di confutazioni, ma, soprattutto, è un ironico e intricato dialogo con il lettore, che non può non ritrovarsi in ogni affermazione folle eppure tremendamente vera di Vitangelo Moscarda, il protagonista.
Ci sono passi lenti, complessi ed articolati che spesso ho dovuto rileggere per comprenderli davvero, ma nel complesso, a lettura terminata, non posso non dire che ho amato questo romanzo, di natura filosofica, dalla prima all’ultima pagina.

Uno, nessuno e centomila (1926) fu definito da Pirandello "romanzo testamentario". Si tratta infatti del suo ultimo romanzo e segna il culmine della riflessione sulla disgregazione del soggetto iniziata con Il fu Mattia Pascal (1904). Attraverso la tragedia di Vitangelo Moscarda – che scopre di essere estraneo a se stesso, "costruito" dagli altri a modo loro, molteplice quante sono le situazioni in cui si trova – Pirandello costruisce una delle rappresentazioni più efficaci dell'assurdità dell'uomo moderno, e delinea la sua filosofia. Alla base della sua visione del mondo, come mostra il filosofo Remo Bodei, c'è la sfiducia che l'uomo possa accrescere la sua coscienza in modo positivo attraverso la messa in luce e il superamento delle contraddizioni."Leggere o rileggere Pirandello non offre indubbiamente alcuna soluzione diretta alle nostre domande.
