Five best friends are spending the summer together and they won't let any magical quest or supernatural critters get in their way.

Beware The Kitten Holy

Lumberjanes Vol. 1

Maybe I just wasn't in the right mindset for this one, but I thought it was just okay? After reading Nimona, it just fell kind of flat for me. To be fair, I've only read the first volume of course, but I didn't like this one enough to keep reading. I love ND Stevenson's work and I'll keep checking it out, but I think this one just wasn't it for me!

Imagine if you will, a strong, wacky group of girls at summer camp where there is something supernatural afoot.

What a mystery! Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are not your average campers, and Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types is not your average summer camp. Between the river monsters, magic, and the art of friendship bracelets, this summer is only just beginning. Join the Lumberjanes as they take on raptors and a sibling rivalry that only myths are made of. This New York Times bestseller and Eisner award-nominated series is written by awesome all-star Noelle Stevenson (Nimona) and brilliant newcomer Grace Ellis, and illustrated by the tremendously talented Brooke Allen (A Home for Mr. Easter).

Friendship To The Max

Lumberjanes Vol. 2

Lumberjanes, Volume 2: Friendship to the Max by Noelle Stevenson is the second collected album. Jen realizing that her campers are not only safe and sound but are awesome heroes has decided that she wants to join them, rather than shelter them from whatever the next danger might be.

A Terrible Plan

Lumberjanes Vol. 3

I liked the attempts to get badges more than I did the alternate world parts.

This was a cute graphic novel but it just wasn't necessarily my cup of tea. There were parts that had fun dialogue and funny puns but I felt that it was kind of jumbled. There wasn't any real overall plot in my opinion. You don't get much character background or development, at least in this volume. I found myself flipping back to pages because I would forget which character was which, and I would forget their names. I read Nimona and enjoyed that, but as for this series, I'm not sure that I will continue or not.

A super cute, super quick read. I didn’t realize this was going to have supernatural elements when I picked it up, but it was pretty fun regardless! It was a bit hard to follow at times because the plot definitely jumps all over the place, matching the frenetic energy of the group of lumberjanes. Didn’t realize Vol 1 was gonna leave me on a cliffhanger so I guess I’ll pick up vol 2!

This is a slight cheat as I read the first 8 issues when they were first released. Still, rereading them in one collection was wonderful. I love all the characters and the adventures they get into. The artwork is great and it's a heartwarming tale of friendship.

I don't have much to say about this book other than it was a really cute story. It is a graphic novel with an adorable art style.

Although I could never figure out how old the characters were supposed to be, sometime they seemed like they were 11 or 12 and other times they seemed to be closer to 15 or 16. It could also be a mix of those ages, some could be 12 and others could be 15.

I did really enjoy the book and the characters. I'm hoping that I can get ahold of the next volume soon so I can continue reading them.

Between a sudden storm hitting the camp, shapeshifters, and strange portals, this is one badge for which the Lumberjanes need to go above and beyond.

Sink Or Swim

Lumberjanes Vol. 6

Lumberjanes is, as always, dreadfully cute, even with the new art style. However, this volume just didn't come off as awesome as previous ones. Partially this has to do with the fact that we're on volume 6 and a lot of the initial mystery has worn off. This book also didn't develop the characters or expand the world much. We got some forward movement, but really it was a lot of cute werewolf/selkie shenanigans. I am totally down for this though, it just doesn't rate as super amazing compared to some of the earlier adventures.

All Lumberjanes are on deck when the High Council comes to camp for inspection! The High Council is coming to camp and counselor Jen is determined to make everything perfect, even though a storm is brewing and kittens from the boys’ camp are manifesting magical powers. It’s every Lumberjane on deck as the girls do their best to prep the grounds for inspection . . . but there are some storms no one can prepare for. This New York Times bestseller and multiple Eisner Award-winning series is a story of friendship, hardcore lady-types, and kicking a lot of butt. Don’t miss out on the continued adventures of the Lumberjanes written by Shannon Watters and Kat Leyh (Super Cakes) with stories illustrated by Carey Pietsch (Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift) and newcomer Ayme Sotuyo.

A Bird's-Eye View

Lumberjanes Vol. 7

Volume 7 of Lumberjanes features MAGICAL KITTIES! I'm always down for magical cats, and these ones do all sorts of fantastic things, including floating, telekinesis, and embiggening. The rest of the story is normal Lumberjanes: there's a giant bird that causes havoc and girls learning lessons about friendship. Not so sure I love the new art, but this series continues to be cute and quite good for the younger crowd.
