Nothing said “Good morning” like the smell of stale cigarettes and spilled beer.

Gus was Emmy’s older brother, Brooks’s best friend, and, most important, my archnemesis.

He was just so . . . grumpy. Men who are that good-looking should not be allowed to be such assholes. It was false advertising.

Emmy put a hand over her heart. “I promise to throw you the best funeral Meadowlark, Wyoming, has ever seen,” she said.

“Don’t forget, I want to be cremated and shot off in fireworks,” I responded.

Here was the fucking kicker: I didn’t even like Teddy. At all.

I didn’t mind picking Riley up. I loved that kid. Yeah, she was the spawn of Gus, but she was also half Cam, which meant she was at least half cool.

But as I was walking out, I heard Teddy say, “So when’s the last time you were arrested?”

“Well, tomorrow you’re going to say yesterday,” Teddy said. “Lucky your mom’s a lawyer.”

I risked another glance at Teddy, who popped one more jalapeño slice into her mouth before she slid out of the booth and walked toward the back of the diner. Dusty followed her with a hand at the small of her back, and I was forced to sit with the fact that my opinion of Teddy Andersen was starting to change.

Not that I didn’t want to spend more time with Riley—pretty much the opposite—but I was ready not to have to see her dad for the rest of the week.

He and his arms and his mustache and his eyes were fucking with my head.

Teddy’s skin had gotten a few shades darker since she’d been here. Maybe it was her copper hair, but I hadn’t thought she’d tan well. The golden glow that was coming off her now proved me wrong on that, though.

I wondered whether I could taste the sun on her skin.
