**Update** Contrary to my previous opinion, I enjoyed this book the second time around. (The remainder of this review is the same as the others in the series.) I have always been fascinated by historical and Biblical fiction. It is a fine line to walk for authors to take characters from the Bible and expand upon their story. The idea of artistic license regarding Biblical figures often makes some people wary. Many authors fail in the attempt. Austin does not. Her characters are compelling, round, and dynamic. I really enjoyed this book and the other two in the series that I own. (I have yet to read the final two in the series. I like leaving it on a high note with Hezekiah since I know the unfortunate story of what comes with his son Manasseh.)

Lynn Austin's writing style took an unfortunate downturn with this book. Some of the character interactions felt as forced and stilted as many of her later books which is a shame because this series of stories could be so powerful. I have never read the last two books of the series and likely never will.
