Wow, wat een goed boek. Ik herken me hier echt volledig in. Het boek beschrijft op een grappige en toegankelijke manier hoe autisme werkt. De voordelen, irritaties, maar vooral ook hoe moeilijk het wel niet is. Ook geeft het tips hoe je met autisme om kan gaan en hoe anderen je hierbij kunnen helpen. Geweldig!

I always feel a bit weird rating and reviewing non-fiction books, especially ones that are based so much on personal experience like this book is. However, I would recommend this book to anyone and absolutely flew through it so it feels right to give this a five star rating. This book is mostly based on Bianca's own experience but she also discusses scientific facts and theories around autism and we also get stories from other people with autism in this book. I especially liked that added to the scientific stuff Bianca added her own opinions based on her own experience and experiences from the autistic people around her. She does also give some tips in the book for neuroptypical people on how to interact with autistic people or make certain things easier for them. Like she mentions in the book a lot of things around autism is focussed on adapting autistic people to the world rather than adapting the world to autistic people and her tips really focussed on the later. I also just really liked the writing in this book I could definetly tell that Bianca has a background in blogging but it just made the book feel more personal. Anyway, I think this is an amazing book focussed on the importance of own voices autism reprensentation and how so much of the discussion around autism is led by neurotypical people. I just highly recommend this book for anyone to read.

Autisme: dat is toch dat je supersnel kunt uitrekenen dat 7 augustus 1984 op een dinsdag viel? Nou... nee. Bianca Toeps legt je in dit boek haarfijn uit wat het wél betekent als je autisme hebt.
Dat doet ze bijvoorbeeld door te kijken wat de wetenschap zegt over autisme (en waarom sommige theorieën de prullenbak in kunnen), maar ook door haar eigen verhaal te vertellen, en andere mensen met autisme te interviewen. Bianca beschrijft op een frisse en luchtige manier de verschillende situaties waar je als autist tegenaan loopt in het dagelijks leven. Daarnaast geeft ze niet-autistische mensen tips: wat je doet als iemand je liever niet aankijkt, waarom je soms beter kunt mailen en vooral waarom het helemaal geen compliment is als je zegt 'maar je ziet er helemaal niet autistisch uit!'

Bianca Toeps (1984) is fotograaf, websitebouwer en blogger op Toeps.nl. Ze blogt en twittert veel over autisme. Dit is haar eerste boek, waar ze zelf de omslag voor fotografeerde en ontwierp.
