A lovely little speech with printed in an interesting and expressive way (if occasionally slightly irritating on the first read!). Well worth reading if you ever have or ever will make things.

I am going to be the devil's advocate and say that I just didn't really love this speech. I thought the graphic design of the book was fun and interesting, but it did get in the way of actually reading the speech at time. The speech itself was, unfortunately, not filled with the most innovative or powerful messages. Gaiman leans on the whole "love what you do" message, which I have always found terribly simplistic. Don't be constantly miserable because of what you do, but work is hard and often not fun. For artists in particular, it's dangerous to suggest that they should never do work that doesn't inspire them as sometimes the boring projects are what pays your rent. Art, happiness, and adulthood often exist in an very fluctuating mess of balance. Enjoy what is enjoyable, know that everyone goes through periods of frustration and crankiness at their world, and don't expect that your work will always make you content. And also know that Gaiman, while he has worked extremely hard, also has had a bit of a charmed career, and most artists will never see his success. It's easy to preach do what you love when you are a bestseller. Take his lessons about learning from all your projects to heart, always work towards an ideal version of your career, but remember that the road is filled with complications and that's totally okay.

In my personal opinion, the formatting of this book is kind of annoying. It's not as nicely done or as aesthetically pleasing as Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination, and I preferred the actual message in that book too. I think the whole idea of encouraging people to make mistakes was really good but I wanted to read more of that, and it was the last section of the speech so was kind of short. In 'Very Good Lives', it focusses nearly entirely on mistakes or failures and why they're important, and I guess since this book has 'Fantastic Mistakes' on the front cover, that's what I was expecting. Again, this is just my opinion and I know lots of people really liked the design and the message. 

That being said, I really admire Neil Gaiman and his work. He's a really great guy and I did enjoy reading this. Lots of people said it really inspired them, but I think I would get that more from watching the actual speech rather than this publication, which was a bit too garish for my liking. I still enjoyed it however, and I would recommend it to anyone with a creative streak, just maybe watch the speech instead.
