Cross My Heart I Hope You Die by Mallory Arnold is one of those books that asks a simple question: Who are we when no one is watching? Who do we become when we’re removed from society, isolated from judgment, and left entirely to our own devices? They’ve already been dubbed 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐜𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬, but they swear things didn’t happen the way they look. And that raises another question: Can you be guilty if you never intended for any of this to happen? Maybe. Sometimes intentions matter; other times, it’s the outcome that ultimately speaks for itself. Either way, one thing is certain - we’re going to get to the bottom of what really happened. I loved that we walk into this story already knowing that Jason is secretly dating three women. The women have no idea about each other - yet - but we do. Knowing that secret from the very beginning completely changes the way we interpret every interaction, every red flag, and every seemingly innocent detail. I thought it was such a clever narrative choice. Genius plotting. 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙖 𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙅𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 - His mother has heart disease and is constantly in and out of the hospital, so he has to abruptly fly home on a dimes notice. Oh, and he also needs to borrow some money from Nora. Thousands. 🚩 𝙍𝙪𝙗𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙅𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 - She’s a kindergarten teacher with a genuinely sweet nature. Jason is supposedly a hard worker who is constantly running off to help someone or take care of some important job. He’s always busy. He’s also heavily into crypto and manages to convince Ruby to “invest” some of her money. 🚩 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙅𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 - She’s a mechanic, and the two met through MatchMe. They can go weeks without seeing each other, and that arrangement works for them. Until Jason lands a big job and suddenly needs to borrow all of Cham’s tools. Her expensive tools. She’s also given him something he can never return. 🚩 I really enjoyed how different all three women were. Their personalities, lives, and relationships with Jason feel completely separate, which makes watching their stories slowly unfold that much more satisfying. 🎧: The audiobook is absolutely worth experiencing. I followed along with the audio and definitely recommend it. It’s performed by a full cast - Victoria Connolly, Stacy Gonzalez, Alexandra Hunter, and Gary Tiedemann - and together they bring an entirely different energy to the story. The narration adds so much to the overall experience, particularly with the different perspectives and personalities. I loved how hilarious this book was. Like, genuinely hilarious while still maintaining its thriller atmosphere. I fully enjoyed the unhinged antics, and I loved watching the women slowly discover the truth about one another. The entire setup to that was literally perfect. I also really enjoyed the police interviews and the creepy little town surrounding that isolated cabin. The setting worked so well for the story - it created this strange sense of claustrophobia and isolation while giving the whole thing an almost cinematic, horror-movie quality. There’s something wonderfully chaotic about this book. It’s part thriller, part dark comedy, part love letter to horror movies, part cult classic, part survival and I had such a fun time reading it. This one is seriously so underrated, in my opinion. 𝕆𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣 ℚ𝕦𝕠𝕥𝕖𝕤: “I recoil at the word. Hysterical. For centuries, this was a catch-all diagnosis for women. A lot of people don't know this, but hysteria is derived from the Greek word hystera, meaning uterus, literally implying that a woman's uterus is the source of her madness.”
