I absolutely loved this read! I really enjoyed Leelos character development. She absolutely loved her brother and couldn’t possibly understand why Endla would want to rid of him simply because he didnt have magic.

 Leelo found out so much about her family and about the islands magic.

Jaren comes into play when he literally falls into Leelos life injured. These 2 were star crossed lovers from the start. As falling in love both realized so much was wrong with the island. What they were being teached was a lie. Determined to make it right but while also hiding jaren of course since he was an outsider🤫 or was he?….

I absolutely loved this read! I really enjoyed Leelos character development. She absolutely loved her brother and couldn’t possibly understand why Endla would want to rid of him simply because he didnt have magic.

am i going insane or is this book a bait for margaret rogerson fans? charlie bowater (the artist of the cover art) is admittedly a quite popular artist within the genre but something about the crop of the cover just really gives similar vibes. to the point where both i and oomf were convinced the margaret rogerson comparison was mentioned in the blurb / marketing materials.

well it was not on any that i would have normally seen - and perhaps for the better.

this book felt pretty pointless, overall. the plot felt short of exciting and so did the romance. i am a big fan of low-stakes stories - or more subdued stories - when executed well. but they have to have something else that they are trying to get across - like explore a topic or a character or a dynamic. and oftentimes, this comes with a striking quality of the prose.

in those regards, 'the poison season' was lacking.

          Mara Rutherford has created a spellbinding world that draws you in like the hunting song and doesn't let you go. This absolutely beautiful book is perfect for fans of star-crossed lovers, haunting forests, and unique magic. 

I was at the edge of my seat trying to figure out if the forest was taking care of the islanders or whether there was something more sinister afoot. I loved the family dynamics and the various aspects of society and coming of age in Endla. What it means to protect your family can be vastly different depending on what you believe you are protecting them from, and I loved how even the antagonists were motivated by good intentions. 

The atmosphere is reminiscent of a haunted fairy tale and is an excellent winter read to cosy up with in the cabin you are trapped in to avoid being discovered and subsequently murdered by a bunch of magical siren-like villagers (if you are in Jaren's situation).

This book has been on my radar for so long, the synopsis and the cover, everything about it just caught my attention. Nothing disappoints your first impressions of this book.

The story revolves around our two main characters, and the one I particularly could relate to was Leelo.
