Marc-Uwe Kling

Qualityland

A decent book with a very interesting plot. I really like some of the elements and the quirky things throughout the book like FaSaSu and the ads within the book. I think that the social commentary in the context of life today was stronger than the story in some ways, such as letting the algorithm rule your life and how all decisions are made essentially by a giant company, even the purchases you make are made for you by algorithm. All in all it wasn't bad, the characters were interesting, but I think it was boring after a while. The resolution was that Peter gets a choice, but even so, it doesn't bring back his humanity he's still ruled by the algorithm and the robots are the most human characters.

Schwer was los in QualityLand, dem besten aller möglichen Länder.

Probably a 3.5.

This satire on capitalism, tech companies and the way our lives are so dependent on algorithms set in a future where all of these things have been taken to an extreme is quite hilarious. The way language is used, or how we live in our own confirmation bias bubbles or even electoral politics - the author makes a lot of fun about all of them but we can also clearly see the parallels to our current reality and that uncanniness was a bit scary too. It’s also very easy to read despite being a translation.

However, there are many conversations in the story that felt like info dumps which kinda bored me. And despite this being a story about an ordinary inconsequential man taking on a mega corporation, I couldn’t see where it was going. And that ending kinda stumped me - I’m not sure if I’m dissatisfied because I shouldn’t have expected anything else or maybe I just wanted it to be different from real life.

Overall, I can say that pick this book up if you want something entertaining but don’t expect it to be very profound or radical in any way.

Everything in QualityLand is geared towards optimizing your life. QualityPartner identifies your ideal mate, earworm personal assistants get you where you need to go and android drones know you need a six pack of beer at the end of a long day even before you crave one. Humans, robots and algorithms co-exist, everything is seamlessly corporatised, stratified and monetized. Your very name reveals much of what we need to know about you and your profile discloses the rest. Peter Jobless is a down and out metal press operator, dumped by his long term girlfriend when she is alerted to a better option on her QualityPad. But Peter has another problem - he seems to be the only one noticing that his fellow Qualityland robot citizens are experiencing an existential crisis. There is a drone who's afraid to fly. A sex droid with erectile dysfunction. A combat robot with PTSD. Instructed to destroy these malfunctioning A.I., Peter starts to suspect the technology that rules us all has a flaw, perhaps a fatal one. Not only that, these robots might be his only friends...

Lea de Sousa

It's the kind of book where nothing you read afterwards is good enough. It sets your bar too high and everything else you read afterwards, for months, feels average and incomplete.

I picked up Qualityland to get a taste for local authors in Berlin and I wasn't disappointed.
