A Sister Holiday Mystery

Scorched Grace

What was love but an infection. Like poison milked from the fang of a rattlesnake, a little can heal you. A deep bite will stop your heart.

Sister Holiday, a chain-smoking, heavily tattooed nun puts her amateur sleuthing skills to the test in this “unique and confident” debut crime novel (Gillian Flynn).

When Saint Sebastian's School becomes the target of a shocking arson spree, the Sisters of the Sublime Blood and their surrounding community are thrust into chaos. Unsatisfied with the officials' response, sardonic and headstrong Sister Holiday becomes determined to unveil the mysterious attacker herself and return her new home and sanctuary to its former peace. Her investigation leads down a twisty path of suspicion and secrets in the sticky, oppressive New Orleans heat, turning her against colleagues, students, and even fellow Sisters along the way.

I am not the target for this book, but I still enjoyed it. It is like a badass tattoos nun who was like a gay punk before she joined a convent. And now there are things happening on the grounds (arsons) and she is fed up with the cops response, so she is taking matters into her own hands. Someone out there is dying for this exact story, I just know it.

3.5 rounded up. This was mystery in a genre new to me: cozy noir. Dark stuff but the style was very cozy mystery. Make of that what you will. If there is a second installment I will read it.

really original story with complex characters with complex backstories. the prose was gorgeous, but dialogue felt cheesy. the ending wasn’t satisfying but overall it was a really unique read.
