It took about four chapters for me to get into this book. The story follows the Maureen McCracken and her family over the course of a year as they struggle to make ends meet near the end of the Great Depression. Maureen is a smart girl with a short temper who learns how to harness her intelligence and control her temper to the benefit of her family.
