2.5 Stars, but 3 Stars for the art. I still liked the art here, even though it did feel a bit.. thinner. Those chunky thick lines from the first volume were slimmed down a little, and I’m not sure if I like it more or less. Maybe less. A little less Mignola, and more Darwyn Cooke, and Amazing Wolfman. I think I like it less. The change of writers here really didn’t help the book, in my opinion. The first one had a solid voice, and feeling, and this one came off as a lot more rushed and less personal. Dialogue didn’t feel quite as authentic, and there were some really distracting choices like when a guy ends up on Indy’s back on the fire escape, or how all the girls in both of these volumes consistently made me do a double take because I can barely tell them apart. (I’m convinced it’s the model for same girl in his class as at the restaurant), as well as some mutual decisions of the writer and the artist, specifically what happens with the artifact at the end of the book, and how Belloq wasn’t armed for some reason at the end, felt particularly unbelievable. Not as enjoyable as the first, but not bad, which I believe is how I felt about them as a teen, and I think this is probably my 2nd or 3rd time reading it compared to the 5 or so of the first, so I think that reflects. A quick read. I honestly wish they went more with the idea they seemed like they were working towards in the first volume, which would either be a continuing story of several parts, even leading up into Raiders, or a series of Adventures set before each movie I think would have been cooler, specifically one involving Mac from the (then at the time a year old) movie Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, or Indy and Lao Che from Temple of Doom. Stories based on Indy’s Allies & Enemies from the series, in a way that expands upon your appreciation and understanding of them. Feels like a wasted effort, especially because this was the last volume, and to my knowledge, the last Indiana Jones comic to come out since.
