A Novel

After putting this book down a few times to take breaks and finish other books, it is done. Inspired by a true story, this book was mostly heartbreaking but had moments of tenderness and resiliency. I think I enjoyed his writing more in his previous book but it’s also been long enough since I’ve read it that maybe my preferred writing style has just changed as well.

This is a wholesome story about an ethnic German family escaping the Nazi's and Soviets between the end of WWII and after. Corporal Gheorghe is my favorite character! His humor during hard times is uplifting and balances the darkness of this story with the family (protagonists) seeking reunification in West Germany. I'm glad Amazon offered me this book as a free gift during their Prime free trial over the holidays!
