Umm... this series has taken such an unexpected turn and I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it. Vol 5 has been the most dramatic one yet and it kind of feels like they're turning the comics into Riverdale. Anyway I surprisingly really enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to volume 6.

Took a sharp left turn

The last issue surely bumped this up from 3 to 4 stars for me. I was on the edge of my seat, Reggie is usually reckless but not this reckless. And Archie what did Reginald have on him for him to agree with this? Still feels weird that Betty and Ronnie aren't best of friends. 😕

I was shocked at how good this reboot was, but then again, I was amazed by Afterlife with Archie as well. Waid and Staples drop the horror and go back to Archie's wholesome roots, just in the 2010s rather than the 1950s. I enjoyed the slightly tweeked versions of the characters, the dialogue was snappy, and Staples art is wonderful (a bit less pleased with her replacement, but that was because they took my beloved Staples away!). The story is simple, but very Archie. I'm glad to see this franchise constantly renewing itself, and this is a great slice-of-life book for younger readers.

I am still enjoying this reboot of the Archie universe that's filled with new art and more contemporary plot lines. However, I am frustrated by how the book is dealing with the Betty/Veronica/Archie mess. Sure, that's a staple of the Archie comics, but I am finding myself loathing Archie a lot this time round. The narrative has set him and Betty up as amazing friends from the time they were kids, and yet one argument and he's off to newer pastures? Archie has always been known as a good friend, but he's pretty terrible in this book. He's obsessed with Veronica, but no one is really sure why. He says that she's confident, but really it seems that he likes that she's pretty and a good catch instead. (Also, confident? Half the time we see her with Archie, she's in the middle of an emotional crisis over something or another). He ends up ruining a fantastic job for his father because he was going to be separated from Veronica. The plot irritated me because it was supposed to be about standing up to bullies, but it wasn't nearly as clear cut as that. In the end, Archie's entire family was hurt by his need to be with Veronica. A family with overdue bills and huge financial constraints. Dude... you've been seeing this girl for like a week. Get over yourself. (And sure, the moving to Singapore would have meant leaving the rest of his friends, but his focus was almost entirely on Veronica, a little bit on Jughead, and literally no one else). I felt really sorry for Betty given Archie seemingly forgetting about her entirely save for when he feels like being jealous about her new boyfriend. She does a lot for him despite him being an insensitive lout, and I'm a bit concerned that the story isn't calling this imbalance out more. Archie Andrews is as self-centered as Reggie, but it is disguised under this notion that Archie is "nice". So that's a long way of saying, the series is fun, but is falling into some of its old traps that aren't that fun to read about. Alas!

Archie volume 3 introduces the infamous Cheryl to the Riverdale cast. Can't help but note that TV Cheryl is way more fun than this one, but we can't all as awesome as TV Cheryl :D Veronica is in Switzerland playing politics, the Riverdale folk are sad face. There's a rather hilarious subplot of Jughead trying to handle a bunch of Archie's responsibilities when Archie has a sad moment. This one is as enjoyable as the previous two, though I do worry about the introduction of the twins as the rivalry stuff can get tedious...

Things actually happen in this volume, which is exciting! Veronica and Archie have to deal with the fact that the honeymoon period of their relationship is over, but the major plot is the drag race between Reggie and Archie. Archie is a douche and an idiot, and Betty ends up terribly injured. I am not a fan of disability as drama, and I think Archie really needs to feel some consequences for his actions. So far Reggie seems to be taking all the blame which is frustrating. 

In plus sides, I enjoyed the Dilton/Betty relationship beginnings!

At first I didnt like Ronnie obv but at The end I just thought they can both do better than him so Why don’t you just dump Him and get together girls?

As someone who LOVES the show, I picked this up wanting to be around these characters more and it is SO DIFFERENT!!! But I did really like it, the artwork was pretty and I flew through the first 6 issues of Archie easily, I’m excited to read more but just know, it’s very different from the tv show! Since I’m so invested in the show, I definitely feel like that hindered my enjoyment of these issues. I did really like it, but I don’t think I “loved” it like every one else does!

First things first. I've never read the original Archie comics. I like in Russia and he's not really a huge cultural influence here. But I have heard about it and the new reboot picked my interest. 

Not gonna lie, the covers drew my attention first. But I've finally read the first volume and can safely say that I liked it quite a bit!

The characters were for some reason nicer than I expected, the story was simple yet engaging and very cute. Archie has great friends and is very lovable by everyone, readers too. And the way he breaks the forth wall? Not innovative now, but somehow it happens unexpectedly every time. I liked it!

Third book finished for AuthorAThon April 2016.

This was really cute, I'll definitely continue on. (:

I'm not an Archie aficionado by any means, but I'm aware of the cultural zeitgeist. That said, I found this re-vamp enchanting and timely. Fiona Staples knocked it out of the park with the illustrations (see panels detailing Archie's failed attempts at jobs, specifically the ice-cream shop). I mean, really, look at that cover. Archie is a fox!

This is my first time with Mark Waid, and the text is lovely. It has the old Archie feel, the Betty/Veronica drama, and good ol' Jughead, but again makes it feel like this gang was born in this generation.

Great for adults and teens as Waid keeps the spirit of Riverdale.

FINALLY CHERYL IS INVOLVED WITH THIS SERIES.



Like, I didn’t think I asked for much. I just needed Cheryl to be a part of my life. And her brother is a part of it too, which is a plus because he just feeds her crazy.



Cheryl is at the boarding school that Veronica is forced to go to. Archie and Jughead flip roles and deal with the loss of Veronica. 



Honestly, Veronica and Archie are low-key unhealthy.. but I guess that’s just my logic?

I love Cheryl. Does that mean I don't have a heart because I need that confirmed.

I'm going to admit it... I am reading these comics because I am fully and unconditionally in love with the show that's based off of them, Riverdale. Where everyone is rich and families have dark secrets tangled up in the next family's dark secret and everyone is just really, really pretty. 

Differences: 
01. Betty and Archie are BROKEN UP after DATING SINCE LIKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in the beginning of this graphic novel, which is very different from Betty having and undeniable but not reciprocated crush on Archie. 
02. There's no Cheryl Blossom... and that is probably the thing that broke my heart the most BECAUSE I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER.



03. Josie and the Pussycats aren't as big of a deal in the comics yet either (is this a joke on the movie? Am I too old? Do only I remember that movie).
04. This was really about real-world problems and dating, nothing to do with a murder. So really, it was less interesting to me. I did enjoy seeing the origins of my beloveds though. 

Short review shorter, it kept me interested enough to grab vol. 2. I need more murder-mystery and Cheryl though.... the Blossom family better make an appearance.

I absolutely am loving these comics. 

I love how Veronica is trying so hard to be loved and accepted by Archie and his parents. Even though she is just buying really expensive things. 



But you really see that she doesn't know the basic things that middle-class people like Archie grow up with. Like setting the table. 

Betty seems to be regretting the lip-stick incident as well... it is getting very interesting...

Also I am really excited about that red head on the next volume's cover. Like I am so pumped. #TeamCheryl

As featured in my comic book roundup, Right On, Riverdale!: Not a fan of horror? Archie has got you covered. If you are a new reader, their website has a lot to select from its archives but if you are looking to read some of the more modern releases, you're in luck! In tune with more classic releases, the new Riverdale is on fire right now. The gang has been recently and successfully modernized and remodeled for a newer generation to meet Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica and more. And with so many spin-offs and different takes, there are so many places to look to!

Seriously, guys. We are totally spoiled right now. Because of time restrictions in me fangirling over Archie Comics (do I have to be an adult with a job? Ugh.) my thoughts on the new non-horror series is going to be a lot shorter. As I haven't finished Jughead, yet, I'm only going to be tackling two series and the World of Archie Summer Annual.

Let's start with the obvious choice, shall we? 
  Archie!
 There's just a solid vibe to Archie in the new Riverdale that I think--I hope--it will appeal to all kinds of new and old fans alike. In with the new, without being out with the old--Archie is a light and sweet series from the newest releases. If older readers are nervous about seeing these character modernized without being themselves, they need not be worried: the gang is all here and still just as we love them! Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and other minor characters are present and just as likable as always. I like the backstory for Archie and Betty and a certain incident that changed everything pre-Archie.

There was something that was undeniably sweet in Archie.
