3.5* Loved everything the author had to say about the history of women being deprived of their public voice and how that ties up to our present situation. Nowadays women in power are often ridiculed and undermined for reasons that are completely superficial or irrelevant to their jobs, like their appearance or their private lives. This only shows how men have controlled and are still trying to control women ¨public¨ roles by putting them down with whatever means are at hand and how society is so used to this practice that we don´t even find it strange that a woman has to endure questions about their outfits or their marriage while reporters would never dare to address their male peers in the same way. Also, I found extremely interesting how the author gives us examples of media using unruly or unconventional mythological female characters to portray and compare women in power as a means to diminish their value in society and damage their public image (like the case of Hilary Clinton in her presidential campaign being compared to ¨Medusa¨). My only problem with it was its shortness, I would have loved a deeper dive into this topic. I will for sure check other works by Mary Beard.
