I was in the middle of a depression while picking up this book, I felt that I needed some comfort and I looked for it in the one place that has never failed me, books

To start off, I want to say thank you to the author for writing this book and to myself for choosing comfort in a time it would have been easy to drown in darkness

Reading this book felt similar to how my mind flows when I’m in that bubble of reflection and wonder. It inspired me both to live and to appreciate life but also challenged me to let go of this constant need for control. Uncertainty has been one of the topics that I believe we all fear in this life. So to accept that life is uncertainty can be a scary thought. However I want to learn to accept it, to be at peace with it

As I’ve mentioned, there were many moments I felt inspired, some of the stories that touched something in me were Nellie Bly’s story of how she became a journalist and what it took to get there. Another was the darkness and despair Bethoven experienced when he fell deaf to the one thing he loved the most, music. Despite this tragedy there was something inside him that held onto life, because he had so much in him that he needed to come to life before he ultimately wanted to end his own. That’s something I heavily relate to, especially this year. I’ve never thought about killing myself as much as I have these recent years. But what stopped me was exactly this, this need to write my story, let the ideas in my mind come to life and let my dreams be something to hold onto instead of this need to have achieved it all. It was a hope and a light in a very dark time of my life. 

The last was the incredible story of how Callahan survived sonething that seemed so doomed and bleak but because of the coincidence and timing of a fish he survived the impossible. Despite how much he suffered out alone on the sea, he managed to look at the stars and still remain grateful to them for existing. That gave me both hope that things always can change and also inspiration to see the beauty in even the darkest places

One thing the author keeps repeating that made me rethink my thoughts of hope, was this «there is nothing stronger than a small light of hope». Personally I’ve always despised the idea that hope is a good thing, to me it has always felt burdened, painful and ultimately ironic. But after reflecting more over my current reality and Haig’s words, I realise that despite how much it has hurt me, it’s also been one of the things that has kept me going. As I see hope, it’s not just a wish for things to be different, it’s also a shift of perspective. Which leads me to the next thing that comforted me while reading. The smallest things in life, is what grounds me the most, the peace and quiet of drinking my favorite tea, or watching the mood while the rest of the world is asleep, or even just learning more about myself, those are the small stars that I hold onto when life feels bleak and painful.

All in all this book brought me a lot of comfort and stands as a reminder to all the wonders and uncertaint infinite possibilites that life is. It will serve as a breath of fresh air when I need to ground myself and come back to myself
