3,5. Some of my favourite lines of the movie weren't in this and I am disappointed. (And yes I will put it under spoiler tags because I can). (view spoiler)[They didn't add Obi-Wan's 'Hello there', nor the 'It's over Anakin, I have the high ground.' and like I get that you want to make it your own story but they are ICONIC LINES come on. I am in Spain without the S 💔

What a beautiful, devastating written portrayal of one of my favorite movies of all time. Matthew Stover is a genius author who knows more about Star Wars than I think anyone I’ve ever met does. The way he tells this story, and the way he portrays relationships (Ben and Anakin’s, Anidala) and the characters within this tragedy are so heartbreaking yet breathtaking. I will never get over the story of Anakin Skywalker and this book will truly be one of my favorites forever.

Even in this case the book is better than the movie.

5/5 stars. 166% emotional devastation. Books will always be able to provide a better insight into the thoughts and process of characters than a movie can simply due to the different mediums and this was no exception. I had read so many quotes, and of course, knew the plot beforehand but the way Stover wrote was just beautiful and heart-wrenching at the same time. The foreshadowing at the beginning, the entire dark and dragon metaphors, the use of second person...it was all absolutely amazing but also so hard to read through. I restarted this book after I stopped the first time because it was too much and so many times throughout I just screeching. It enhanced what was already there and brought more pain to an already emotional devastating film. Palpatine's constant manipulation of Anakin at absolutely his lowest point in life was just uncomfortable and so hard to read - Anakin's mental state was just heartbreaking. All the Anakin and Obi-Wan quotes were just absolute pain and I was just crying so much. The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins - but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back. Love is more than a candle. Love can ignite the stars.

** spoiler alert ** Dude, this book is amazing. It really is. It's heartbreaking and hard to read because Anakin's fall is so much more twisted and yet makes a thousand times more sense than the movie could ever show. After growing up on the old movies, I can see the biggest difference between Luke and Anakin is one thing-Anakin always felt controlled, but didn't really try to stop it. Luke was never controlled. Not by his aunt and uncle, not by "Ben", not by his fear or anger. He refused to be controlled. And that last PAGE! Oh man! Oh man, this honors the movie and yet transcends it. It's dark, it's sad, it's a tragedy. But it's amazing. Purely amazing.
