"A beautiful forty-year-old French woman is pathologically obsessed with her husband, even after fifteen years together"--

A Novel

My Husband

In this suspenseful and darkly funny debut novel, a sophisticated French woman spends her life obsessing over her perfect husband--but can their marriage survive her passionate love? At forty years old, she has an enviable life: a successful career, stunning looks, a beautiful house in the suburbs, two healthy children, and most importantly, an ideal husband. After fifteen years together, she is still besotted with him. But she's never quite sure that her passion is reciprocated. After all, would a truly infatuated man ever let go of his wife's hand when they're sitting on the couch together? Determined to keep their relationship perfect, she meticulously prepares for every encounter they have, always taking care to make her actions seem effortless. She watches him attentively, charting every mistake and punishing him accordingly to help him improve. And she tests him--setting traps to make sure that he still loves her just as much as he did when they first met. Until one day she realizes she may have gone too far . . . The winner of France's First Novel Prize in 2021, My Husband builds on the premise of hits like Gone Girl and Fates and Furies--how well can you really know your spouse?--and adds the tension and creepy obsession of You. The result is an irresistible read--compelling, tense, and engaging, infused with sly subversive humor, and told in an utterly original voice that makes it unforgettable. Translated from the French by Emma Ramadan

It was different and fun, but I wish there was more physical crazy involved. Nonetheless it was a fast, fun read.

“I like my showers hotter than him, but I enjoy rinsing with this water chosen by him, in a world a few degrees cooler than my own”

If you consider yourself an over-thinker, this narrator will prove you wrong. This book is a monologue from an obsessive wife who tirelessly scrutinizes the most minute details of her marriage, seemingly living in a world of her own.

Is a shared reality experienced the same way by everyone, or is it altered by the private workings of our minds? When do we tell ourselves that we’re overthinking and when do we believe in our instincts?

I actually think she could have been crazier

this isn’t suspenseful, it’s just annoying

unhinged, so funny, insane, such an addicting read

I bet this is even funnier in French. It is literally (spoiler) two weirdos finding each other in the world. It is also an interesting observation on romantic relationships in the modern age but presented in a manner that rather than make you worry, makes you go a little "well, this is ridiculous". Ventura just manages to take the sinister element out of it and rather focus on the absurdity of it all.

This book was really good, quite a page turner and the end is insane.

Rounded down from 3.5 cause I didn’t enjoy it as much as appreciate it. Good twist at the end.

If loving a man (and the state of mania associated with it) could ever be compiled into a book it would be this. The narrator has the most severely anxious-leaning attachment style I’ve ever seen in my life but because of that, the ending was both shocking and validating. For the sane woman reading this book, consider it a piece of misandrist literature.

I want to give this book 1 star and 5 stars at once.
I hated this book and loved it as well.
I see myself in her, and i hate the i see myself in her.
Almost everything in this book is so relatable and in the most disgusting way.
I don’t want to talk about the plot nor the writing style, i only want to talk about her and him, and how much i see myself in it.
This was a book that made me get emotional, and possibly the only one that made me sit silently and just think.
