3.5. The beginning was extremely slow but by the end I was really enjoying the characters. I plan on picking up book 2

3.75 It was a slow start but really enjoyed it

Le début est un peu lent mais la fin est captivante, et j'ai adoré les personnages (surtout Nate <3). Il me tarde d'avoir le fin mot de l'histoire !

** spoiler alert ** bruh what ??? of fucking course im gna read the next book now why trap me like that this book sucked soooo bad and its annoying bc the idea/plot feels like it has so much potential.. its so slow like hayes only dies after about 56% of the book which is just fucking annoying bc he was not a character i liked anyways so it was very hard to give a shit abt if he died bc of his own stupidity or bc of some other reasons. i thoroughly enjoyed albert's side of the story bc his grief over losing his wife & daughter was just so palpable and i felt like crying at his last riddle to robert and yes btw i hope annoying stevie figures it out in the next one bc IM DYING TO KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT. (and im too dumb to try to figure it out on my own) im also very grumpy rn bc i was only curious about three things with much passion throughout the book: a) dottie's highlighting of that particular line in a study in scarlet b) what flora and leo were hiding c) answer to the last riddle of albert's and guess what? i got answers to NONE OF THEM. that's right. not a single ounce of sense made or satisfaction given by the end of this long shitshow and im supposed to sit here and give a shit abt david whoever the fuck's father? nope im good! 2 stars only bc of albert ellingham and robert

I'm going to admit that I spent most of my energy reading the present day scenes. Everything you need to know about the 1938 kidnapping and the aftermath in 1939 are presented through Stevie's research. Reading it first hand isn't needed, but it's there if you want it. That said, Johnson maintains distinct voices for the past and the present. The historical sections ring true. http://pussreboots.com/blog/2019/comm... Marginalized uhoria maze -- 66CCCC

The heck lmao I mean I did really enjoy it just wha-

*3.5 I'm honestly a little disappointed by this story. I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as I expected to. I liked Stevie as a character, but I didn't find the plot to be all that gripping. This was an overall quick read but I found it took forever for anything to feel like it happened? She was putting together all these little clues but I wasn't all that emotionally invested? It was strange. It took me a while to really feel like I was in the story. I liked the alternating timelines but also felt they needed...something? And sometimes I'd find myself so caught up in the past timeline that I didn't want to go back to the present. And the romance fell a little flat for me. I love romance but it felt like this one came out of NOWHERE. The ending did pull me in for the next book in the series, though. This felt like a solid beginning to the series and I'm interested to see what direction the story takes next.

i’m definitely stuck in a YA reading phase because of my slump and this was short but still kind of interesting i’ll admit, maureen, i am listening

this book might be the worst ya thriller/mystery book that I’ve read in my life coming from a fan of a thriller/mystery book… like I don’t even know where to begin, I don’t want to write a long review so I just want to say that I hate David so much and stevie is dumb as hell :/ everything abt this book suck I’m sorry but it doesn’t enough to make me read the second book too & THIS BOOK series has no reason to have 5 book in total like how crazy is that ?!

4.5⭐️ stevie was annoying and dramatic at some points in the book, but overall easy to get trough, GREAT ending and I can't wait to start the next one ahhhh *spoiler here* DAVID IS SUCH AN A**HOLE AND A PLAYER, HOW COULD HE FOUL ME IN FEELING BAD FOR HIM?? also janelle deserved SO MUCH BETTER

First in a mystery series. Wasn’t too satisfied with this book but because of the cliffhanger ending, I’ll give the sequel a try. I hope that the rest of the books in the series deliver more than what this book gave me.

3.5 stars This book had a great atmosphere and the opening scene pulled me directly into the story. The school setting was perfect and got better and better. I am not a fan of the 1930's period so the original mystery was not extremely interesting to me but objectively it was good. The characters were likeable and I enjoyed following their little group. I'm really looking forward to the sequel to learn more about both mysteries.

** spoiler alert ** Nice books, I do wish Maureen Johnson could have given us an answer to at least one of the mysteries. I found most of the characters slightly annoying at times. Otherwise really interested and I hope to by her second book.
