This is the 2nd book in the series. You absolutely can read this one without having read the 1st one. I found this one as engaging as the 1st. Although, I'll admit that I knew who the bad guy was early in the story, I didn't know the how or why. I have no doubt that there are better, more complex plots/storyline out there but this meets my need of keeping my attention and getting me past my non reading slump. I will definitely read the next one in the series.
