 The Last Train To London  describes the several people involved in the ‘Kindertransporten’ (translates to children’s transportations) which allowed (mostly) Jewish children from Germany and Austria to escape to the UK. There are alternating perspectives — not all necessary in my opinion — but the book mostly focuses on Truus Wijsmuller and Stephan. Truus played a significant and dangerous role in smuggling hundreds of children across the border to the Netherlands. Stephan, a rich Jewish boy living in Vienna, eventually escapes with her help. 

The story is absolutely fascinating, and had me rooting for the characters immediately. The writing is solid and easy to read. I do think the formatting could’ve been better — the inconsistent POVs and the ridiculously short chapters interrupted the flow of the book and made it more difficult to connect with the characters on an emotional level. I also thought the parts about Stephan (and Zophie) felt more like a YA-novel rather than an adult novel, though I understand the reasoning behind the writer’s decision to use Stephan as a protagonist. 

Despite its flaws, I’m mostly grateful Truus Wijsmuller, a true heroine, was given a voice through this novel. Anyone who wants to learn more about WW2 should definitely pick this up.
