i found my copy at a book sale and i was happy with this read. i enjoyed reading about their friendship, how they empowered each other, and the way they processed and went through the changes during their time.

This is a charming story of 5 women - Frankie, Linda, Brett, Kath, and Ally - who meet by chance at a playground and become lifelong friends. Every woman should have a group of friends like these. 

Set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the theme of women's rights plays a central role. The women are all housewives and mothers (except one, who longs for a child of her own) whose role is to take care of the family and home and support their husbands' careers. Eventually, each woman's aspirations to play something a little more than a supporting role emerge. They discover that a couple of the women dream of writing a book, so they form a writing group that meets on Wednesdays. 

The group of friends help each other weather the inevitable storms of life. They deal with issues such as racism, infertility, and adultery while trying to carve out a little spot for them to be themselves and not just wife or mother. It's interesting to see the different paths each of their lives take.

Even though at times, I wish we could go back to a time when women didn't have to work and do so much, reading stories like this make me realize that women today are fortunate to have choices that our mothers and grandmothers didn't have.
