MY REVIEW

When you come across a book that have you talking about it days after you have read it, then you know you have a winner. Well, Beneath the Mask is one such book.
My decision to read and review this title were done on a whim. I had no knowledge of this author so I was entering unchartered waters by taking that decision. My reason for taking this risk was based solely on the blurb. I had no idea if I was going to like it or not. 
Well, after completing Beneath this Mask, which kept me up all night, I have to say without a doubt it was well worth the risk. This is an emotional read, so be prepared to have all your emotions engaged. 
This story has a dual POV, which allowed me to identify with the both protagonists thereby enabling me to experience all they were feeling. 
In Beneath this Mask, readers are introduced to Charlotte Agoston and Simon Duchesne. Charlotte is looking to start her life afresh after her father was arrested and charged with securities fraud. She wanted to distance herself from all the publicity and the stigma surrounding her father’s crime as such, we see her changing her name, location her appearance and her persona. Simon is a former navy pilot, the son of a congressman and a budding politician. The chances of them meeting was not very high, but fate has a way of bringing two souls together that are meant to be. Their meeting would lead to major changes in both their lives.
Charlotte found herself falling for Simon, which made it more and more difficult for her to keep her past life as a secret. She found herself torn between telling him the truth and keeping her secret. Simon knew she was hiding something and the closer he got to her the more determined he was to find out what it was.
Simon is the type of guy that most women would give their left arm just to have him in their lives. He is sweet, sensitive, caring and sexy. He is not afraid to go after what he wants and he wanted Charlotte. He had no intention of giving her up.
This is a great storyline that will captivate you from beginning to the end. It will have you turning the pages as you will be eager to find out what will happen next. The love scenes are passionate, sizzling and hot.
Overall, this is an excellent read and I can’t wait to see what next the author has in store for her readers.

Charlotte’s on the run. After her family’s name was publicly walked all over, she needs to get away from it all. Her father has been found guilty for stealing millions of dollars. Everyone knows Charlotte’s name, and she’s constantly shunned and looked down upon. She feels her only option is to go into hiding. Off to New Orleans she goes, and starts a new life, under the name “Charlies” as a tattoo artist at Voodoo Ink.

“The tattoos had become more than a camouflage to hide the girl I’d once been, they were a declaration that I was never going back. I could never again fit into the life I’d previously led.”

This is where she meets Simon, the one guy who could possibly break down her walls and reveal the secrets she’s trying so vehemently to keep hidden. Simon’s father is in politics, meaning he’s expected to continue down the very same path. The thought of Charlie dating someone that’s so prominent in the public eye seems like a very risky move, considering her desire to stay hidden.

The struggles and tension this relationship was forced to endure brought this story to a whole new level for me. It wasn’t all easy cheesy, lemon squeezy for these two. They both had hidden secrets that they were unwilling to share, and because of this, their relationship remained rather strained. Simon decided to open up and reveal a ghost that’s been hidden in his closet… but is Charlie willing to share hers? And will their relationship make it if she does?

Beneath this Mask is your typical NA in the sense that we get a hot, protective, and charming guy to break down the walls surrounding the feisty, sheltered and secretive heroine. I think may others may find this story a bit redundant… but for me, it was just the right amount of stereotypes mixed with uniqueness. I really enjoyed the steamy relationship between these two, and listening to the audiobook kept me completely hooked. These narrators did such a fantastic job bringing this story to life. I felt like I knew these characters on a personal level and was simply being told their story in a private setting.

There wasn’t a question in my mind about continuing on with this series. Beneath This Ink is Con’s story, and it’s narrated by Sebastian York. So yeah, a total a no-brainer.

Beneath This Ink

I was very excited to see Beneath this Ink would be Con’s story. I was intrigued by him in Beneath This Mask and wanted to get to know him more. I can’t say that I’m now a fan of Con’s, as he still kind of gets on my nerves… but Sebastian York’s narration definitely helped me with that a bit. 

I liked this story and felt that it had a great pace and entertaining story. My main issue with it was basically the connection between Con and Vanessa. I can’t really put my finger on it… but I just didn’t really buy their whole relationship. I don’t know if it was not connecting with these two characters individually, or them as a couple, but I just didn’t feel their romance, if that makes any sense. So though I really liked the story, it didn’t wow me as I had hoped.

Overall, a super-steamy intense story that kept my attention throughout. With these two amazing narrators, Sebastian York and Andi Arndt, the audiobook is definitely the route I would most recommend. I couldn’t have chosen two better narrators personally. They were perfection!
