Where the Truth Lives

Mia Sheridan2020
The follow-up to Where the Blame Lies--Where the Truth Lives is a gripping, page-turning, romantic thriller that will leave you gasping for breath. When the director of a local mental health hospital is found murdered and mutilated, Homicide Detective Reed Davies is first on scene. What was done to the body is gruesome. Inexplicable. But Reed is dealt another curveball when he finds that the doctor who discovered the victim is someone Reed is intimately familiar with--a woman with whom he shared one passionate night weeks before.Dr. Elizabeth Nolan is somehow tangled up in the crime, and even while Reed must now question her possible involvement, he can't help being drawn to the beautiful, enigmatic woman. As more bodies appear and the devious killer terrorizes Cincinnati, a shocking connection begins to emerge, one that not only involves Dr. Nolan, but Reed himself. A connection more twisted and elaborate than he can imagine. Now Reed must hunt the monster down, a killer who will stop at nothing to see his diabolical plan to its final, deadly conclusion.

Detective Reed Davies is called to a local mental facility, which is the scene of a homicide where the victim's eyes have been removed and replaced with a gooey black substance. The woman who discovered the body is Dr. Elizabeth Nolan, the woman Reed knows as Liza with whom he had a one night stand weeks before. As more bodies begin to turn up in the same condition, it becomes clear that there is another serial killer operating in Cincinnati. The city is still reeling from the destruction caused by Charles Hartsman, who Reed has discovered is his biological father. Liza's safety falls to Reed who must figure out what her connection is to the killer without letting his desire for her cloud his judgement. Where the Truth Lives is the second book in the Where duet and raises many thought provoking questions. The mystery in this story is both layered and well paced. There are multiple suspects, clues, and subplots to keep the reader interested from the beginning of the book right up to the end. While the romance between the protagonists is better than the one in Where the Blame Lies, it is still the weakest part of this book. Overall, Where the Truth Lives includes an excellent mystery with an extremely satisfying conclusion. Thanks again to Bree from In Love & Words for recommending this duet.

I would not recommend reading Where the Truth Lives as a stand-alone, as the knowledge of the prior publication Where The Blame Lies (readable as standalone) is crucial to enjoying #2, in my opinion. I read it in more or less one sitting, as it was a gripping pageturner, with mostly enjoyable characters.
