Mysteries of Pittsburgh

I am glad I've finally picked up a Michael Chabon book. Overall I've enjoyed the book. At the same time, it is definitely a book that is out of my comfort zone and sweet spot for literature. It's good! The writing is truly superb and the characters are nicely developed in my opinion. As an author, I can see why Chabon gets the hype and renown he does. Truly, truly great stuff.

As far as the content of the book it's fine. I do like the characters as plot devices and I have a special spot in my heart for Arthur. Every other character in the book is so ridiculously flawed that I can't truly say that I enjoy them. I'm indifferent to many like Art and Jane, but the majority of characters in this novel just... suck. 

As I've previously mentioned, this book is outside of my normal genre zone and reaffirms my reasons for not going outside of it often. I just need a little less self-hate, dark thoughts, crappy people, and little more joy. Once again, this isn't necessarily a knock on the book as a work as a whole but more-so my experience of it. I just don't like to read books that are so based in realism that I end up hating the world a little more when I'm done. 

All-around solid book. I recommend if you're looking for a serious story featuring queer coming-of-age issues, this is for you.
