I'm not really sure what to make of this book. The idea is great, you've got the Devil, an imp, a girl called Hannah and her family. There's a machine and an engineer and it sounds original and new. But the actual book seems at odds with this. The author is unsure what category this book is. It feels like Young Adult, but the language used does not reflect this. However, with Hannah as the main character, it feels very 'young'.
There are positives to it, I enjoyed the style of writing and it was very funny in places. The descriptive language used is excellent and really sets the scene. My favourite character was Vaneclaw, the imp. It just felt like the book was a bit all over the place. I would be interested to read more Michael Marshall Smith to see him hone his craft, because there is definitely something there.
