Superstition. su·per·sti·tion. noun. A belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation. An irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature or God. A notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary. Like many athletes I’m notoriously superstitious. I have a pregame ritual I follow to the letter. But mine isn’t the typical, don’t wash your socks. It’s…unconventional. And embarrassing. And when the teammate who idolized me as a kid stumbles on it, I’m mortified. I’m also desperate enough to accept his help so my career doesn’t end before I want it to. Now, I’m playing the best hockey of my life. So is Justus. But we’re technically violating team policy and risking our careers in the process. Mine is nearing its end. His isn’t.
