I received an ARC of this book from the author and I voluntarily reviewed it. Thank you Michelle Brown! At first glance, this book appears to tick all the boxes for me; cartel, badass characters, and dark romance. Perfect combo, right? However, I was unable to believe in the story. I think that there are a few reasons for that. Firstly, I think that the book is too short. It needs more content, and more time for proper character development. Due to how short it is, some characters appear to do things or say things that aren't in line with their persons. So, I could not believe the story, because I did not believe the characters or their relationships. Second, I needed more emotional investment from the characters. There was an overall nonchalance the whole way that turned me off. I want my heart to beat simultaneously alongside the characters'. I needed to get to know them better. Third, I expected more darkness from this book. I'm not saying there wasn't any, I just needed it amplified. I think that when it comes to Cartel books, the darker the better. Overall, a good start to a series, but just needs to amplified all around!
