Ok, I usually try to look on the bright side of books, but this one was just too similar to harry potter. It was SO like almost everything in that book, it was hard to read. But it had a good enough plot I could get through it, and some good characters too. I just wouldn't read the rest of the series. Good book, but just unoriginal.

This book/series is just as great as I remember thinking it was when I first picked it up in middle school. I love the characters and the plot and everything about it, however, there a lot of parallels to Harry Potter. I mean, a main character with dark, messy hair that people complain about. A family full of ginger-haired, freckled-faced people. A dog with four names, two of which are Percival Pettigrew, I mean I could go on, lol. Maybe it was drawing inspiration but I know this might annoy a few people so I feel the need to point it out. I think this was always the part of the draw for me, though, why I was so invested in it in the first place. It's a great series, especially for middle grade students. Quick reads (even if the books are a little lengthy) that keep interest, for sure!

Since his father died, Charlie Bone has lived with his mother and her mother, in the house of his other grandmother, Grandma Bone. Looking at a picture of a couple with a baby and a cat, he suddenly discovers he can hear their voices. Although he tries to hide his new gift, Grandma Bone and her scary sisters soon find out, and send him to Bloor's Academy. Charlie quickly finds life at Bloor's pretty tough, with its strict rules and the malevolent head boy, Manfred, set against him. When Charlie discovers that the child in the photograph is being held, hypnotised, against her will, he and his new friends with 'gifts' try to awaken her. But can they overcome Manfred's sinister hypnotic gifts?
