some of the misunderstandings/conflicts were tad too trite but i truly appreciate how the heroine is so warm and not afraid or like 'innocently shy' in being physical with the hero. so in short, that's actually an entire star's worth.

It was a cute story! I appreciated the mutual respect, the friendship and the tenderness between Philly and Arthur. Philly's infinite compassion was also a welcome breath of fresh air, and I liked that she extended her kindness to her supposed "rival". However, while competently written, it was a bit tedious at times. I also found Philly rather passive and I wasn't fully on board with the fact that she didn't really challenge her husband's VERY protective streak. Overall the story was OK but I'm just not sure I'm interested in pursuing more stories from this author. But all in all, I thought it was well written and well-paced, with good characterisation. A cute palate cleanser!

In the first few chapters, I was nonplussed and just set to enjoy the ride that is Mimi's delightful historical fiction, not knowing that this would be my first five star Mimi book.
I adore Philly and Arthur's relationship! For being very nearly a marriage of convenience, it was without most of the usual angst that trope provides, but the characters communicated like adults and it made for a lovely story. I just really liked them both.
The mystery had quite the turn, and left me legit surprised.

I continued my tradition of starting off the fresh year with a Mimi Matthews book. This one presented everything as promised by a Matthews novel. Per usual, the romance is lovely. As an animal lover, I had a natural affinity towards the main female character. All I ask is that cats should have a stronger presence ;) 

Pleasant novel. Light romantic read for when you really don't want to consider the implications of the onslaught of life.
