A raw and harsh story about a reality that many women are still living by the hand of a patriarchal society that keeps on belittling their lives. So many women are lead to believe that they will never be better, smarter, or as capable as a man, a lie that is said by both men and women in a cycle that has to be broken. "The best girls" is a short story but it packs a punch, especially in the end where you can feel the suffering of the narrator, but at the same time the acceptance of something undesirable but inevitable. Congratulations to Min Jin Lee for this short but powerful book!

Oooh... was not expecting that! A short story that seems tame the whole way through but will send chills through your spine on that last line. Listened to it on a car ride home. Always love Min Jin Lee’s work.
