4/4/24: read cover to cover for the first time since 2017 (?) and god, how fucking fundamental. I discovered so much more to this book reading it now at 24. at 17 I didn't really think much about Singapore as a landscape, or transience and violence and softness, or complex relationships, or queerness; I attached to the one about the complex horrible teenage girl and like yeah that was fundamental too! and the book at 17 planted the seeds for a lot, but I don't think I could fully appreciate. returning to this as an adult, however, with much more deeply felt on all the topics above - lowkey transcendent. i'll be coming back to this time and time again.

Maybe Amanda Lee Koe should reconsider writing erotic literature as a career instead...

There's no doubt she can write (and well) but throughout most of the short stories, the "moral panic" element seemed to always be engendered through concepts of romance/love/sex (and sometimes quite forceful in a way). Some stories could have been developed in a much insightful direction but I guess those are now missed opportunities.
