It's springtime in Athena, Mississippi, and the Athena College Library has a new director. Elwyn Dillard is a brash, abrasive Yankee whose forceful style causes ripples throughout the library. He's on a mission to cut costs; not only does Dillard want to take away Charlie's job, he's also made it clear he doesn't want any four-legged creatures in the building. Dillard also wants to sack Melba, and the fiery Melba is vocal about her resistance to that plan. That makes her a suspect when Dillard dies. Charlie and Diesel's new job is to prove her innocent.
