Some Things I Still Can't Tell You

This was such a wonderful peak into the mind of such a beautiful man inside and out. These poems touched me in a way poems haven’t in a long time. They made me laugh, cry, reminisce and just feel so many things!

I’m going to be honest. I never would have picked this collection up if I wasn’t so invested in the television series Supernatural and the actors associated with it. I loved Misha’s character, Castiel, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every convention panel he’s been a part of that I’ve watched on YouTube. It was his name that had me picking up this book in Target, though at the time I was just getting back into poetry. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of poem I found. While not my favorite collection, I found it to be a solid one.

The love poems made me ache, especially knowing that the 30-year relationship being alluded to in so many ended in divorce before the collection’s publication. I can’t imagine the devastation of separating after spending almost two-thirds of your life together. I really enjoyed the two sections involving running, the dichotomy of the joyfulness of the first set and the gloom of the second. In my option, these first three sections were by far the strongest. I spent more time with these poems, thinking about them and rereading them, than I did with the back half of the collection. Those last three sections, involving people in Misha’s life, his parents, and his kids, weren’t quite as structurally sound as the first three. However, the last stanza of “The Last Poem” was a lovely ode to the quiet moments of parenthood that resonated with me in spite of my not having children. It expressed a sentiment I’ve seen in my brother while he watched his daughter sleep, and it’s achingly sweet.

There were lines in this collection that stood out, many of which were in the first Love Poems section. But I can’t say that I added any new favorite poems to those already living in my mind. However, one of the great things about poetry is that you never know how you’ll feel about it upon revisiting.

Every single person giving this book 4 or 5 stars is only doing so because they have bad taste or are fans of Misha Collins. I liked supernatural, but I only thought mean things while I listened to this book.
