I really enjoyed this book. As someone who read most of the Redwall books as soon as they got published becoming increasingly disappointed when I realized how utterly shallow and formulaic they all are, I approached this book with trepidation.
Thankfully, McAllister does not paint all creatures of certain species as good or evil. In fact, she creates a quite compelling story with incredible nuance. With that being said, I just could not get over the anthropomorphized creatures. For me, this took away from the quality of the story.
