He was intent on proving that the word ‘dying’ was not synonymous with ‘useless’

My old professor, meanwhile, was stunned by the normalcy of the day around him. Shouldn't the world stop? Don't they know what has happened to me? But the world did not stop, it took no notice at all, and as Morrie pulled weakly on the car door, he felt as if he were dropping into a hole. Now what? he thought.

He was intent on proving that the word dying was not synonymous with "useless."

“…But if you're surrounded by people who say ‘I want mine now,' you end up with a few people with everything and a military to keep the poor ones from rising up and stealing it."

Celine

On the plane ride home that day, I made a small list we all grapple with, from happiness to aging to having children to death. Of course, there were a million self-help books on these subjects, and plenty of cable TV shows, and $90- per-hour consultation sessions. America had become a on a yellow legal pad, issues and questions that we all Persian bazaar of self-help.

My days were full, yet I remained, much of the time, unsatisfied. What happened to me?

What she mostly wanted, he learned, was the same thing many people want Someone to notice she was there. and

Ford Hall had chemistry labs, and some administration officials worried that these radicals were making bombs in the basement. Morrie knew better. He saw right to the core of the problem, which was human beings wanting to feel that they mattered.

At seventy-eight, he was giving as an adult and taking as a child.

"All this emphasis on youthI don't buy it," he said. "Listen,I know what a misery being young can be, so don't tell me it's so great. All these kids who came to me with their struggles, their strife, their feelings of inadequacy, their sense that life was miserable, so bad they wanted to kill themselves

Yes, I said, but if aging were so valuable, why do people always say, "Oh, ifI were young again. You never hear people say, I wish I were sixty-five." He smiled. "You know what that reflects? Unsatisfied lives. Unfulfilled lives. Lives that haven't found meaning. Because if you've found meaning in your life, you dont want to go back. You want to go forward. You want to see more, do more.

*People are only mean when they're threatened," he does. said later that day, and that's what our culture does. That's what our economy does. Even people who have jobs in our economy are threatened, because they worry about losing them. And when you get threatened, you start looking out only for yourself.

“Accept what you are able to what you are not able to do'"; Accept the past as past, without denying it or discarding it"; Learn to forgive yourself and to forgive others": Don't assume that it's too late to get involved.”

“Have you found someone to share your heart with? he asked. "Are you giving to your community? "Are you at peace with yourself? "Are you trying to be as human as you can bę?

I suppose tapes, like photographs and videos, desperate attempt to steal something from death's suitcase.

Now Stein was going dead. Koppel imagined the two men together one day, one unable to speak, the other unable to hear. What would that be like? "We will hold hands," Morrie said. And there'll be a lot of love passing between us. Ted, we've had thirty-five years of friendship. You don't need speech or hearing to feel that.'"

Idk why the writing didn’t entice me, it took me so long to finish this. The lesson is cute but I thought it was just okay?

Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.

For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?

Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live.

An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson

Finished this wonderful, emotionally heavy, and deeply informative book about life. It is a must read and something to learn from, especially from the point of view of a dying person. The book teaches many important lessons things that are so common yet often ignored in our day to day lives. We keep living in this cruel world thinking that someone will love us no matter what, but the truth is, we have to start loving people ourselves. One of Morrie’s famous lines, “Love each other or die,” is so simple, yet incredibly impactful. Another line that stayed with me is, “When you are in your bed, you are dead.” A must-read. I will definitely come back to this book whenever I feel lost in my life.

An Old Man, a Young Man and Life's Greatest Lesson

“When you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”

Makes you think hard about how you’re living your life and the choices you make, for your own good.

Makes you think hard about how you’re living your life and the choices you make, for your own good.

This is one of those books that make you realise the harsh reality that death comes for everyone, and the way mindset differences can make such a difference on how your remaining time can be spent. He not only speaks to the importance of relationships and human connection, but lives it. Morrie was such a vibrant, jovial human from words on a page and this book touched me in so many ways.

What an incredibly moving story. I implore everyone to read this, and take acknowledgement of the wisdom within this beautiful memoir of an amazing old man into their lives, as I will now try to do.

Reading this felt like both a gentle hug and a loud wake-up call. I think it is one of the most important books of recent generations, and will continue to transcend generations of readers, and non-readers, alike.

It is stories like this change people — that help them. This book has power. I will not forget it.

The talks between Mitch and his professor Morrie are incredibly powerful and full of wisdom. Such beautiful reminders about what really matters in life. Definitely one of my best reads in 2025 ♡

it was a rollercoaster but overall a hug.

it was an easy read but at the same time wasn't. u thought u have heard/read/experienced through everything (ironic with me being somewhere being a twenty-something). u still miss out a few points. this book is as simple as reteaching as how to be a human. which is in the first place we are. capable of mistakes, regret, emotions, love, and a whole lot of other things.

i'm bawling my eyes out. everything morrie said is so true—people should really learn from him. he's such a realist, and at the same time, an optimistic person. this is so sad, i'm too soft for this. and to think that this is a memoir makes it even sadder.

A book that everyone should read at least once in their life.

Very cute read. But the ideas we’re not super crazy and original so it didn’t really change my perception of anything

I will cherish this book and bring it everywhere I go, as a constant reminder of what I should be focusing on in life ;(.

Dear Morrie, i've read this incredible book about you and i've loved it with my entire soul. But a question still bugs me. "When I give my time, when i can make someone smile after they were feeling sad, it's as close to healthy as i feel." You talk about devoting yourself into constant giving and loving finding purpose and meaning in that, I really do believe in that too. I also believe in the inherent good inside of people. But, when do I know to stop? When I know people are only using my kindness for their own good, having power over my vulnerability and guilt. Do I keep giving, and burden myself, or stop giving and still burden myself with guilt?

Bener aja setelah selesai, aku masih pengen "ngobrol" sama Morrie. Tapi tetep aja aku benerbener hold this boook soooo clooosee to my little heart, so meaningful to me in every way still :) My favorite read so far. 10/10

"Tuesdays with Morrie" recounts Mitch Albom’s weekly visits to his former professor, Morrie Schwartz, as they discuss life’s most profound topics: love, family, relationships, money, and ultimately, death. Through their conversations, Mitch, the author, reflects on how his own life has been transformed by Morrie’s thought-provoking insights. This is not a work of fiction, but a real and heartfelt account; it’s short and simply written.

This book radiates compassion while capturing the simplicity that often lies beneath life’s complexities. It’s filled with powerful passages and lessons that I’ve highlighted, knowing they are words I want to carry with me. Morrie’s words are heartfelt, and his story is inspiring; a testament to how one person can profoundly touch the lives of those around them. Even in death, Morrie lived on his own terms, finding peace and teaching others to do the same.

"If you hold back on the emotions—if you don't allow yourself to go through them—you can never get to being detached. You're too busy being afraid. Afraid of the pain, the grief, the vulnerability that loving entails. But by throwing yourself into these emotions... you experience them fully and completely. Only then can you say, 'All right. I have experienced that emotion. I recognise it. Now I need to detach from it for a moment.'”

This passage struck a deep chord with me. I am someone who often struggles with detaching from my emotions. I feel everything intensely, and more often than not, I find myself overwhelmed by the weight of what I’m feeling, whether it’s pain or love. Due to this, I fear that if I let myself experience emotions too deeply, I’ll become unable to let go. To protect myself from that, I often run away from my emotions rather than allowing myself to feel them. Morrie’s advice to throw yourself into emotions and experience them fully feels both liberating and terrifying. It challenges my tendency to hold back and run away, offering a more hopeful perspective: that by allowing myself to feel, I might eventually find the peace that comes with understanding and, ultimately, detaching. It’s a reminder that vulnerability, while difficult, is essential for truly living and healing.

"These people were so hungry for love that they were accepting substitutes. They were embracing material things and expecting a sort of hug back. But it never works. You can’t substitute material things for love or for gentleness or for tenderness or for a sense of comradeship."

This resonated deeply with me as a critique of not only consumerism but also the increasingly digitalised world we live in today. Social media and online platforms often amplify this phenomenon, presenting curated versions of people’s lives and promoting the idea that happiness can be bought; whether through the latest phone, or trending experience. We are surrounded by advertisements and algorithms that fuel our insecurities, convincing us that owning more or appearing more successful will make us feel complete. Yet, as Morrie points out, these pursuits often leave us feeling lonelier and more disconnected than before. The emphasis on materialism, and, currently, digital validation, distracts us from the deeper, more fulfilling connections we could foster with others. Morrie’s words challenge us to resist these societal pressures and prioritise love, gentleness, and companionship over the fleeting gratification of possessions or online approval.

While the book is filled with thoughtful observations, it doesn’t necessarily provide groundbreaking insights. Much of its philosophy is familiar; simple truths about love, connection, and living with purpose. Still, they are truths worth revisiting, especially in today’s fast-paced, materialistic society. Morrie’s advice feels particularly relevant in reminding us to prioritise human connections over fleeting distractions.

That said, I had mixed feelings. The book leaves an impression but doesn’t dig into how to apply its lessons practically. For me, it’s a reflective read that I’ll remember for its vulnerability, even if it didn’t provide entirely new revelations.
