Mo Dao Zu Shi

okay - i have opinions, but i'll keep them brief(ish):

there's too much walking from point A to point B to point C, and too much telling instead of showing. this book could do with far less pages as a good chunk of it is just the author overexposing plot points to the reader through very long dialogues. the xianxia parts were really interesting and i was happy to be immersed in it, but the narrative is too clunky. characters reminisce and remember scenes from the past that are told in detail as flashbacks in the middle of like, sword fighting scenes or cadavers-are-walking-around-eating-people scenes. the whiplash leaves you confused for a second, especially when you're still trying to figure out what's going on. the cliffhanger at the end - well, i guess i saw it coming, considering this has more volumes.

i enjoyed the characters, i suppose, and i enjoyed seeing the interactions between wei wuxian and lan zhan, especially in the last 150 pages or so when they're investigating the mystery together. their dynamic is pretty cliché (the sunshine and the grumpy, the one who forgot and the one who remembers, etc etc), but still fun to read nonetheless. i was hoping to understand how wei wuxian got into the path that ultimately caused his demise, but that's not touched too deeply (and i hope it is, at some point). 

overall, it's an okay start to what seems to be a very grand series- kind of on the lackluster side, but i'll keep on reading to see where it takes me. for now, 3.5.
