Mokumokuren

It has Hikaru’s face. It has Hikaru’s voice. It even has Hikaru’s memories. But whatever came down from the mountains six months ago isn’t Yoshiki’s best friend. Whatever it is, it’s dangerous. Carrying on at school and hanging out as if nothing has changed—as if Hikaru isn’t gone—would be crazy...but when it looks so very like Hikaru...and acts so very like Hikaru...

The summer hikaru died is something i anticipaed reading for quite a while, but i wanted to gather up a few volumes i could read in a sitting. The story starts in the summer, Yoshiki and Hikaru are getting ice-cream where Yoshiki first confronts "Hikaru" about being slightly different as no one can fully mimic a person. I love seeing Yoshikis inner thoughts and how he fights himself internally knowing whats actually the right thing to do but "Hikaru" wont just go away. Im honestly really intersted to see where this goes.

I first tried reading this last year, around this time, but I was in a horrible place mentally and did not think it was a wise decision. However, I am glad I came back to it this year.

While the story has not quite delved into the themes I would like a story like this to explore just yet, I think it is promising. The art is beautiful, too, and the author has an uncanny ability for representing the languidity and oppressive heat of summer, taking it to anxiety-inducing suffocation. Excellent atmosphere for good horror.

I think maybe I'll treat this as this year's Halloween read... It's so weird and disturbing but endearing at the same time and intriguing and rather scary. But I feel like it also makes you question humanity and what makes a person a person, like where does your personality and being begin and end? It feels like the ship of Theseus in human form. Idk one of the best mangas I've read so far and the art is fucking A M A Z I N G!!!!!

(I've read a lot of manga this year but I'm only adding my favs to GoodReads and also only the first volumes to signify them. But this review is for all of the chapters that are currently out)
