Easily one of my favorite mystery novels of all time. A bit rough around the edges age-wise, but remains a fun, tense, weaving tale with twists right up until the end.

I enjoyed this layered mystery, although I had trouble keeping all the characters straight — especially between the two different police departments and between two large and sassy women who were tertiary players. The unraveling of this whodunnit was clever and kept me guessing, likely because of its complexity: a murder in a church in Wisconsin, a murder in Minnesota, then another murder, and ties that date back to an earlier string of murders in the south. Like I said, complex and layered. I look forward to reading more and am interested to see which characters are further developed in subsequent books.
