Sigh... The middle third of this book was a slog. The ending was quite enjoyable and even though I knew that there was a fourth book, the way it was written I was almost convinced I was approaching the end of the series. It could have been ended here.

I get the feeling the author had all these interesting worlds he wanted to explore and uses this series as a means to do so, and the story beats exist to fill in the time and plots. And he even made a little sarcastic comment in the book itself about writing almost for the sake of writing. 

I continued reading this series because they were a gift I've been hauling around for years, I'm going to buy the last one myself just because I'm pot committed at this point.
