Charlotte Temple

Susanna Rowson's best known work, CHARLOTTE TEMPLE is the story of an innocent British schoolgirl who follows the advice of Mademoiselle La Rue, her immoral French teacher. Lured to America and seduced by an English lieutenant named I Montraville who has promised her true love and marriage, Charlotte abandons her adoring parents and makes the sea voyage to I New York. Discarded by Montraville, who promptly falls in love with a wealthy young American, Charlotte must fend off the advances of Montraville's ruthless comrade, Belcour. Pregnant with Montraville's illegitimate child. Charlotte is unable to save herself from poverty and ruin. Briefly reunited with her father, Charlotte gives birth to a baby girl and dies in her father's arms.
