Iconic, love how Darcy is a lot more animated than portrayed in the movie from 2005 and the show from 1995.

Mr and Mrs Gardiner are absolute sweethearts and this could be seen in the recent The Other Bennet Sister.

Mr Bennet is kind of a dumbass as not-so-subtly mentioned by Mrs Bennet in the beginning and by Lizzy towards the end.

All in all I’m so glad I finally got to read it!

I began to read Pride and Prejudice after a recommendation from my mum. I couldn’t put it down. I think that while it may have seemed rather slow at the start, I really appreciated the build-up and by the end of the novel you had developed a respect from each and every one of the characters. Although I generally prefer more gripping novels, the romance was very compelling. Feminism is explored very early on and even though, at the end of the novel it did seem as if all the women were married to respectable gentlemen the women were still very prominent and determined. I particularly loved how class and status affected the plot and how it was used to manipulate the characters’ personalities.

A perfect novel. One of my favourites. Every time I read it, I’m delighted anew by Austen’s characters and their idiosyncrasies. 

The character arcs are so satisfying, and the way the two main characters find their way towards falling in love is so beautifully realized and so relatable human.

A classic for a reason, and still the best opening line in literature. Pride and Prejudice is the original romantic comedy with brains. Set in Regency-era England, it follows Elizabeth Bennet as she navigates family expectations, social pressure, class politics, and a certain Mr. Darcy who is… not immediately charming. What starts as misunderstanding and pride slowly turns into something much more satisfying, all while Austen quietly drags society with perfect wit. The genius of this book is how modern it still feels. Elizabeth is sharp, funny, and independent in a way that makes her easy to root for, and the dialogue is genuinely entertaining. Austen writes romance with intelligence, where the emotional payoff comes from growth, humility, and seeing someone clearly, not just from grand gestures. And yes, that opening line is unmatched. It sets the tone instantly: clever, biting, and iconic. I reread this and still find new things to love every time, from the humor to the social commentary to the slow-burn romance that basically invented the blueprint.

Given it was the 213th anniversary since Pride and Prejudice was published, I thought it would be a good time to finally read this Jane Austen classic. While it is renowned for being a classic romance novel, Austen explores several important themes prevalent in the Regency era, from social class to gender roles. The novel centres around women needing to marry to not only comply with societal expectations but also ensure financial security throughout their lives, with characters constantly reminded not to marry beneath them regarding wealth and social status. This is interesting as Austen herself remained unmarried, thus you can somewhat see Austen expressing herself through the character of Elizabeth, a strong-willed, independent, and clever young woman, highlighting women should not be restricted within societal norms. There are layers to Austen’s commentary on gender roles in the nineteenth-century as she criticises the societal constructs of marriage and stereotypical gender roles, with men maintaining positions of power while women submit; Elizabeth, however, offers a sense of hope for female readers in the 1800s. Austen portrays marriages of convenience and desire to meet pragmatic societal needs through the Bennets, Collins, and Wickems, but contrastingly constructs a marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy based on love and respect.

Social class is also a notable theme, with the conspicuous portrayal of social hierarchies and how prejudices from interacting social classes influence lives and decisions, with the Darcy’s and Bennett’s frequently narrating the prospect of ‘marrying up’ and ‘marrying down.’ The Bennetts are from the middle-class sector and express their desire to marry their five daughters to men of a higher class to ensure financial security. Despite the characters being more powerful than working-class Georgians, there is still a conflict of power and influence. I am already a loyal fan to the 1995 bbc series and was thrilled to discover that it's probably the best book to screen adaptation ever. Listening to this audiobook was like playing the show without looking at the screen, i had a blast!!
