i cannot offer any constructive opinions, i simply enjoyed this. i liked that the clues and mystery kept me guessing but that i also got to follow them along with the characters.

last but not least, i cannot stress enough how much the 3☆'s i am giving to this series are different than the ones i have been giving this year's romance reads. these are from me enjoying them too much to be able to truly form a scalable opinion.

I enjoyed this series. The final book was very good. 

I would recommend this series with a warning that the first 2 books and the first half of book 3 talk way too much about Holmes’ obsession with cake and the number of chins she feels she has/ is acceptable.

Lady Sherlock #5

I love how the characters just keep getting more fleshed out the more I read. I especially love the way Charlotte and Lord Ingrams ideas about their relationship has changed from his need to decline her attempts to bed him with no promises to him opening up more to the idea of being more forward about his desire for her. This story was focused on inspector treadles and his incarceration for a crime we don’t know much about because no one saw it except him. This was another entertaining mystery that Charlotte Holmes solved with the help of all her friends.

4.5! This was a great continuation of where the previous book left off. I felt this one was more romance heavy than the previous books. Of course, that's not a complaint! Ash remains as one of my favorite heroes to date. I enjoyed seeing his growth and how he evolved through the books. I also absolutely loved the adorable flashbacks that gave deeper insight into Charlotte and Ash's history.

I swore I knew who the murderer was, but I was wrong! The reveal wasn't as shocking as I was anticipating, and felt a little anti-climatic, hence 4.5 stars instead of a perfect 5. It was still well written as always, and I'm excited to read the rest of the series. The next one can't come fast enough!

In Sherry Thomas' latest Lady Sherlock book, Charlotte is called to aid Alice Treadles -- whose husband, Inspector Treadles, has been accused and arrested for the murder of two men -- both of whom were closely involved in the business that Alice inherited and has been running. Has Inspector Treadles done the unthinkable? And will he accept Charlotte's help, despite his misgivings about her approach? Meanwhile, Charlotte and Lord Ingram continue to navigate the questions around their own relationship, and its power dynamics: since their relationship shifted in "The Valley of Fear," where are they headed? And when each of them wants the other, does that make them vulnerable?

This has been my favorite volume of Sherry Thomas' series in a long while -- not that I've found any of them to drag. But it was especially satisfying to see Charlotte and Lord Ingram working so closely in tandem to help Alice Treadles, and navigating their own questions about each other in the process. If the main mystery is tangled up in the ambitions of one woman to run a business, then the romantic arc delicately (and satisfyingly!) is about their ambitions towards each other.

Ambition serves as a thematic foundation throughout the novel -- and the characters who appear as Charlotte, Lord Ingram, and Mrs. Watson work towards a solution present many different types of ambitions: positive, negative, and bewildering. I hope that some of the side characters (especially Mrs. Sullivan and Miss Longstead) prove to be set-ups for future plots -- it certainly seems plausible that they could be.

Though I think this novel *could* be a starting point to the series if it had to, readers will be rewarded by starting at the beginning and working towards it, so that the character development pays off.
