B) It's an essentializing, otherizing display of white fantasy about the "Noble Savage". Yuck.

I was sure this would nab a lofty spot on my all-time favorites list. Recommended by a kindred spirit, it seemed to have what it took to result in some literary bonding...travel to an exotic land, a peek inside a mysterious culture, and an abundance of spiritual musings. Sadly, I remained curiously un-bonded at the end...even finding myself a tad irritated at times.

As I would read, something would nag at me, put me off. Maybe a lack of warmth or authenticity. Possibly a result of emotional distance in favor of facts and spiritual theory. Whatever the reason, I remained aloof.

There's a significant amount of debate about the actual authenticity of this book. Is it a true story as Morgan claims...or...did she make it all up (with good intention)? By the time I closed the back cover, I could believe either theory.

Despite my struggles, I have no regrets. Morgan's message is massively positive and I can now walkabout on U.S. soil infused with a bit of Aboriginal spirit.
