My Brother's Husband

My Brother's Husband

"From one of Japan's most notable manga artists: a heartbreaking and redemptive tale of mourning and acceptance that compares and contrasts the contemporary nature of gay tolerance in the East and the West. Yaichi is a work-at-home suburban dad in contemporary Tokyo, married to wife Natsuki, father to young daughter Kana. Their lives are suddenly upended with the arrival at their doorstep of a hulking, affable Canadian named Mike Flanagan, who declares himself the widower of Yaichi's estranged gay twin, Ryoji. Mike is on a quest to explore Ryoji's past, and the family reluctantly but dutifully takes him in. What follows is an unprecedented, revelatory look at and journey into the largely still-closeted Japanese gay culture: how it's been affected by the West, and how the next generation has the chance to change the preconceptions of and prejudices against it"--

4.5 stars i read in one sitting and i can't express too much on how well-put this book is with tackling the gay culture that's currently happening in japan and what it means to be a family when the family is divorced. + it brings up so many discussions surrounding gay culture in Japan such as the homophobia that's happening in Japan that doesn't bring much coverage in Western culture and how that carries on to future generations that many children don't realize when children don't truly understand how homosexuality is problematic in their eyes + i enjoy yaichi's character development as not only is he trying to forgive his recent indifferent relationship with his gay twin brother but learns how to truly accept homosexuality when it's more than just words and what's considered morally fair for himself + everyone were likable characters (especially Kana, she's just wholesome and innocent) + enjoyable and a learning experience for everyone ranging from young readers to elders

i read these two mangas in about 2 hours, in one sitting and this really close it off very well and i'm very satisfied with how everything has went, from yaichi's character arc to diving into more conversations about gay culture i contemporary japanese society. definitely an important must-read that brings huge volumes on LGBT matter. more to come!

I really enjoyed this. I'm always surprised by the cultural difference in Japan. I don't know how accurate this portrayal is, but it's not hard to imagine that certain subjects are just ignored or swept under the rug rather than confronted over there. What's great is that it not only touches on alternate lifestyles, but there's also the foreigner aspect to it. Mike's a lovable fish out of water foreigner. Kana's brilliantly open minded in her innocence (she's constantly showing her dad new ways of thinking). And Yaichi is the man stuck in the middle. He's stuck dealing with his twin brother's death, meeting his brother-in-law for the first time, and just simply reconciling his cultural expectations with foreign ones. I really like Yaichi, because he's got clear biases and he genuinely doesn't know how to process it all. But he's learning. I also like how Yaichi and Mike are bulky, muscular men, versus the typical string-bean, lanky characters that often appear in manga/anime. The book is touching and thoughtful. I think I heard that it's getting turned into a live action movie or something, so that's something to watch out for too.

This volume covers the second half of Mike's trip to Japan to meet his husband's family. Yaichi continues to work through his unconscious homophobia and finally directly addresses it with other people. And it continues to be so sweet and wonderful. Mike's relationship with Kana is just so pure and seeing a growing camaraderie between Mike and Yaichi is so heart-warming. Just like with the first volume, I simply can't recommend this manga enough.

This book has content warnings for homophobia and xenophobia. This was a very cute and wholesome story. Well, it does deal with some more difficult topics but just overall it's really cute. I liked the different themes this manga discussed. I really liked our characters. The main problem I had with it, was that in some points it was a bit confussing. I am really excited to continue on into this series though and would recommend it.

** spoiler alert ** this is so amazing, it's really sweet and delicate. the way the author brings some subjects surrounding LGBT+ people is very adorable and easy to just understand. I loved to meet yaichi and see him evolving and becoming a better person, learning with mike, learning with kana. can't wait to read the next volume!
